Raise the Red Lantern (Zhang Yimou, 1991)

I highly recommend this film, which is probably the least Western-oriented among Chinese films that circulate here. This is one of the first Zhang's films, that include the popular "Hero" and "Daggers", but it is very different from them. "Lantern" is very neatly, minimalistically shot, with only a few characters and superb acting from all participants. Comparing this film to "Concubine...", the latter is so full of plots and sideplots, one cannot possibly keep track of all these large and small statements the director is trying to make... But the "Lantern" is very focused and yet even though its subject matter is quite "exotic", it is easy to relate to.

И это всё, спросила я, когда началась и тут же кончилась сцена любви втроём. А мне столько говорили!
Серьёзно, мне фильм не понравился, во время просмотра я чувствовала неудобство от фальши.
Так не рисуют, так не фотографируют, так не соблазняют.
Голос за кадром зачитывает занудный текст, и герои, не только американцы, ведут себя как на приёме у психолога.
У Juan Antonio Gonzalo в этом фильме нет обаяния, которое объяснило бы мне сюжет. Второстепенный мужчина, муж Вики, мне понравился больше, несмотря на его мещанские разговоры, может актер чувствовал себя свободно или роль не такая искусственная, как у Хавьера Бардена. Пенелопу мне было жалко, но так видимо и требовалось по замыслу.

Burn After Reading

This recent Cohen brothers' film is now available on DVD. I read quite a few negative reviews, but the movie is extremely fun to watch - on par with "Intolerable cruelty", and with somewhat overlapping subject matter. Brad Pitt is awesome as an All-American moron. In the finale I almost choked laughing.

Secret

We saw the French movie "Secret". Although sometimes it looks that it is hard to say anything new about Holocaust, this movie does. There are practically no horrors of the war shown. However, the pain lives inside even in the 50-s and 80-s. Unusual twists of the plot may be only mitigated by the claim that it is based on a true story. And days after seeing the movie can not stop re-living it.

I am sure everyone watched it, and it was my second time in probably 25 years. This film does in retrospective feel uniquely Russian in its seriousness, but then that's what Russian culture is for - to remind us that there's more to life than American-style "pursuit of happiness" (and just look how people are devastated around us now that the party is over).

The film is a classic, and the DVD quality is very decent. I had two favorites: first, there is a recurring motif of "people on horses" appearing from nowhere, torturing for no reason the otherwise happy locals, then going away. Nothing like this to describe Russian history. The second is probably everyone's favorite bell-casting scene, which is simply the most perfect piece of film-making out there. So if you have 3.5 hours to kill, please watch it again.

Этот фильм я видел, когда он только появился, зимой 1967-1968го. Запомнил единственный эпизод: лошади едут по Москве в грузовике под невообразимо прекрасную музыку. И вот, 41 год спустя, смотрим его с женой, дочкой и внучкой. От фильма - не оторваться. Нравится как снято, что снято, держит не отпуская с первой минуты. При том, что многое непонятно. Мы видим отдельные эпизоды непрерывно текущей жизни, и что не показали, то не объясняется. Но ощущение подлинности возникает сильное. Если бы не последние кадры с "хорошей молодежью", глядящей на зрителя в упор. Про фильм интересно было бы поговорить. Фильм мне подарили, так что могу дать посмотреть.
Жену фильм не затронул. Дочь смотрела не отрываясь. Вот кто шестидесятница - это дочь Ева, родившаяся в 1978 году. Внучка (6 лет) быстро отвлеклась, попросив позвать ее, когда будет про лошадей. Но этот (некороткий) эпизод досмотрела до конца.
